Converting document formats

Convert documents to a format that you can edit.

Using the convert feature, you can change the file format of a document. Converting enables you to use the Rich Text Editor to work with documents, even if you do not own the editing program originally used to create the document. The document created by the conversion process contains the contents of the original document but might not retain certain features and settings. For example, style sheet settings in a Microsoft® Word document may be lost in the Rich Text Editor format.

When you convert a document, the converted document replaces the original document. Therefore, you lose the original document. To save a copy of the old document, if versioning is enabled, create a version before you convert the document.

To convert a document:

  1. Click on the down arrow next to the document name to display the menu.
  2. Click More Actions > Convert.
  3. A window opens with a list of all the possible conversion formats for the document. If the file can not be converted, the screen displays No conversions possible.
  4. Select the file format for the converted file.
  5. Click OK to convert the document.
